2018 April Active

(photos to come)

Thirty-nine players participated in Victoria in the first of two 2018 Active tournaments in the Community room at Victoria’s Central Library.  Unfortunately, we had 9 no-shows which resulted in too many forfeitures in the first round.  In future, first round pairings will be based on confirmed (in-person or recent communication of) attendance 15 minutes before scheduled start time.

Ian Cordon, Ross Richardson, Reza Sardari, Rowan James, and Haibo Sun all at 4/5, pressured our co-leaders Roger Patterson and Rod Brown.  As Roger and Rod played a well fought contest to a draw, it was left to a tie-break to establish Rod Brown as our trophy winner.

Congratulations Rod, a worthy replacement to last year’s winner Jason Cao.

Up-and-comer Haibo Sun was awarded the U1700 Trophy over last year’s winner Rowan James.  An excellent showing by both players.

U1700 winner:   Haibo Sun

Book prizes were awarded to the following players:

A)     U1500 Jason Bell and Leo Cultura 3 points

B)      U1300 Simon J Smith 2.5 points

C)      Unrated Amir Afshar 3.5 points

An excellent performance by Amir who follows in Dave Greeley’s footsteps (last year’s winner) and has boosted his ratings significantly.

We commend and thank Nigel Hanrahan, our novice tournament director, for running an excellent tournament.  The schedule was closely followed, pairings arranged expeditiously, disputes settled and lessons learned by all.  This is especially important as newer players adapt to competitive chess.

Please note that Thrifty Foods will boost their contribution to chess in Victoria by chess players using a Smile card when they purchase at Thriftys.  Please contact Paul Leblanc to receive your free card.

We would also like to thank Aiyang Ma and the library staff for arranging the facilities and providing chess equipment for this event.

Please register early at VCCactives@mail.com for our September 15th Active tournament.  It will be at the same time of day and in the same location (community room).  You can de-register at any time and please remember to reconfirm in order to avoid having to be present 15 minutes before the start time of 10 AM.
