Event Report: Sept. 2010 Fundraiser for the 2011 Canadian Chess Challenge
Victoria Junior Chess is organizing the 2011 Canadian Chess Challenge. To support this, the Victoria Chess Club held this fundraiser Sept. 11 in conjunction with the Summer Chess Festival organized by Victoria Junior Chess.
Our venue was outdoors in the public square at Fisgard and Government Street. Thankfully, the weather turned out well for the day of the event, although perhaps a little chilly. $283 was raised for the cause.
We had some interesting visitors including the former president of the British Chess Federation Sandy Cordon as well as his son Ian, who played on the 1986 Bermuda Olympiad team. Our occasional New Zealand visitor Neil Cruden played and is apparently preparing to move to BC.
1st place went to Valeria Gansvind with 4.5/5. 2nd & 3rd went to Jesse Johnson and Jason Cao. Jason (aged 10) scored a 2241 performance rating enroute to his 2nd place finish. He goes to the World Junior Chess Championships next month and we wish him success there as well.
