A 5 round, Active Swiss tournament
Eighteen players took part in a one day Active Chess event at the Victoria Chess Club on Saturday September 17th. The event was a fundraiser for Canada's participation in the 40th Chess Olympiad to take place in Istanbul, Turkey in 2012.
Ray Wu was the surprise winner. Ranked only 10th in the field, he started the tournament with a first round draw against top rated Howard Wu (no relation) then cruised to victory with wins against Mathew Geng, Li Geng, Roger Patterson and Paul Leblanc.
Second place was captured by World Under 10 Champion Jason Cao who secured second place with a last round win over Mark Dutton.
The U1700 trophy was won by Gulf Islands resident Deron Stewart. followed by Nick Peters.
Both Ray and Deron had their VCC ratings adjusted to reflect their outstanding performances.
$203 was raised for the Olympiad Team.
