Victoria Chess Festival 2007

Victoria hosted a variety of chess events over the 2007 Easter weekend in one location. These events included the BC championship, an open tournament (the Grand Pacific Open), the BC Provincial Grade Championship, and a Bughouse tournament. The festival was a great success pulling in more than the expected number of participants. The open tournament wound up as the largest open tournament in recent Victoria history.

The Grand Pacific Hotel, next to the BC Legislature, provided a wonderful playing site and a special rate of $89 for the occasion. See http://www.hotelgrandpacific.com for more information.

Also in attendance was Larry Bevand of the CMA with a bookstall.

Many thanks to the organizers and TDs (Brian Raymer, Greg Churchill, Roger Patterson, Paul Le Blanc, Lynn Stringer)

BC Championship

The BC Closed Chess Championship was held April 6-9, 2007 as part of the Victoria Chess Festival. Brian Mc Laren and Howard Wu dominated the field with Brian edging out Howard to become the 2007 BC Champion. Prize fund and travel support was provided by the BC Chess Federation. TD was Lynn Stringer.

Second through fourth place was shared between two Washington players, top rated Mike Mac Gregor and Mike Murray as well as local Victoria player Brian Esler.

The Under 2000 prizes were divided after a four way tie between Arie Milner, Evan Raymer, Elliot Raymer and Tanraj Sohal.

The excellent location, the synergy of events and the guaranteed prize fund resulted in one of the best attended open tournaments in recent Victoria history. The organizer Brian Raymer and director Greg Churchill hope to make it an annual event.
